ZUGFeRD

The Central User Guide of the Forum for Electronic Invoicing Germany (ZUGFeRD) is a standardized format for electronic invoices in Germany. The Forum for Electronic Invoicing Germany (FeRD) developed it as a hybrid format that combines a visual representation of the invoice in a PDF/A-3 file with a structured, machine-readable dataset.

This dataset is typically stored in an XML file and embedded as an attachment within the PDF file.

For issuing electronic invoices to the German federal administration, not only XRechnung is permitted, but also other standards. This includes, for example, ZUGFeRD version 2.2.0 using the XRECHNUNG profile. Other formats are also permitted, provided that they comply with the requirements of the European standard EN 16931, the Federal E-Invoicing Regulation (E-RechV), and the terms of use of the federal invoice receipt platforms.
